Business Cards in the US are a lot different to the ones in Japan. The actual cards themselves look similar but the way people handle them in each country are very different. I do not have much experience with business cards in general but the way I see it in the US. The cards are given quickly and put in the receivers pocket or bag. Also, not all business cards are given in the US they can also sometimes be seen on a reception desk in a business. Now compared to Japan it seems that the way business cards are exchange there is very formal. The cards are exchanged by the two people and they have to give each other the card a certain way and say things a certain way which is vastly different from the US. What is even more interesting is that after receiving the business card you are not able to just slide it in your pocket. You have to store it a certain way otherwise its seen as disrespectable.
Overall I find the difference between cultures over just a simple thing interesting. I'm curious about why the business cards are so formal in Japan and what is the history behind it. I also wonder what it is like violating these business card etiquette rules and what happens. The actual contents on the card, I wonder if they are varying between countries or if they are all the same.
